Having leak issues with your toilet is not very pleasant to begin your day with. Discovering a pool of water around your toilet after you come back from work or get up early to go to work is very frustrating. A leaking toilet can affect your whole day’s mood only because of the thought of how complicated the fixation would be. But fixing a leak in the toilet is not very complicated or difficult, to be honest.
You can easily fix your toilet leak by yourself if you don’t want to call a plumber. It takes no more than 2 hours from your house day, and your toilet will be working perfectly fine soon. So let’s get into this step by step guide on how to fix your toilet base leak!
Supplies you need
- Toilet Tank Tray Adjustable wrench
- Tank Insulation
- Replacement tee bolts
- Replacement wax rings
- Bucket/ sponge/ gloves
- Putty knife
- Tub and tile caulk
Check Condensation
Water that will be pooling around your toilet because of condensation will be very easy to see and spot. The water will be condensing the tank, and you will be able to see clear water on the tank and the bowl. Mostly water condenses on the tank because of the temperature difference. To prevent the pooling of water, you can
- Install a tray temporarily to keep the water off your floorboards.
- Try to keep a normal temperature in the bathroom, so there is no way of condensation.
- Insulating your tank will help keep the water in the tank from cooling into the porcelain.
- Install a new flapper incase or make sure the already installed one is hooked properly and is working fine.
Tighten Tee Bolts
Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the tee bolts on either side of the toilet base. By doing so, you will be pressing the wax seal that is between the floor and the toilet, making it leak-proof and sealed.
If your tee bolts are not working, you might want to install new tee bolts. As well as a new wax ring.
Buying Wax Rings
Before buying a wax ring, you should be aware of the model of your toilet and of what kind of wax ring you are looking for. If you do not have any idea of what model of wax ring you want or what kind of toilet you have, then just take pictures of your toilet and show it to your home-depot workers.
Install the wax ring
To completely fix the toilet leak, you just have to go thru this one last step.
- Disconnect the toilet from the water supply
- Remove the toilet
- Discard the old wax ring from the toilet
- Install the new wax ring on the drain opening of the toilet
- Position the bolts on each side of the drain flange in the key opening.
- Reinstall the toilet
- Connect the water supply
